The African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM) launches in the United Kingdom this Bank Holiday Monday (August 26 at 8pm) with its launch screening of US film festival favourite ‘Big Words’ at the Stratford Picture House.  AFFRM founder and Sundance Award-winning filmmaker; Ava DuVernay and Big Words director, Neil Drumming will join a live panel hosted by rapper; Ty.

Critically-acclaimed hip hop dramedy ‘Big Words,’ written and directed by journalist-turned-filmmaker Neil Drumming, is set in Brooklyn on the eve of President Obama’s history-making first election. Three former members of a promising hip-hop crew cross paths again to discover that some things never change.  The film stars Dorian Missick (Southland), Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Wire), Zachary Booth (Keep The Lights On), Yaya Alafia (The Kids Are All Right and America’s Next Top Model cycle three ) with Darien Sills-Evans and rapper Jean Grae and is a poignant study of black masculinity and friendship set against the beauty of hip hop and the community it can foster.

AFFRM’s mission is to further and foster black cinema throughout the diaspora, the launch screening in the UK follows six, successful theatrical releases of black independent film in the United States.  Tickets are on sale here.
