LIFESTYLE: MARVELLOUS MULLED WINE RECIPE FROM LIZ EARLE

mulledwine_84959_16x9

Liz Earle, creator of the award-winning Liz Earle Beauty Co., mother of five, organic farmer and more recently founder of Liz Earle Wellbeing, tells us about the health benefits of red wine and shares her favourite recipe for mulled wine.

“The benefits of red wine have been widely publicised in recent years, with most scientists agreeing that, when drunk in moderation, it may help protect the heart, prevent blood clots and strokes, and even ward off certain cancers including colon and prostate.

A glass of red wine contains high amounts of natural polyphenols or antioxidants which not only help our cells fight against free radical damage but also increase our levels of ‘good’ cholesterol. It also contains procyanidins which help reduce blood pressure and protect against hardening of the arteries. Studies have shown that red wine may boost brain power too, especially for older women, although the jury’s out as to whether this benefit comes solely from wine or includes other alcohol. Don’t forget, it’s only a glass or two that may keep the doctor away, not a whole bottle!!

If you’re in need of a little seasonal cheer, why not enjoy a glass of delicious mulled wine. Adding spices such as cinnamon, cloves and star anise also boosts our antioxidant levels. This is my personal favourite recipe which will be served to guests at an upcoming candlelit carol concert in aid of my charity, LiveTwice.  A heart-healthy winter warmer!”

Ingredients:

Use the below as a guideline, but feel free to add your own additional spices such as vanilla and cardamom.

·         2 oranges, organic (or well scrubbed)

·         Peel of 1 lemon (organic, un-waxed or well scrubbed)

·         100g caster sugar

·         A generous pinch of freshly grated nutmeg

·         3 sticks cinnamon

·         6 cloves, plus extra for garnish

·         2 fresh bay leaves

·         2 bottles of fruity inexpensive red wine, preferably organic

·         500 ml water

·         5 star anise

Method:

Peel and juice one orange into a large saucepan along with the lemon peel, sugar and all the spices apart from the star anise. Add just enough water or a little wine to cover the sugar, then simmer gently until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to boil for a few minutes to infuse the spices until you have a sticky syrup. Then add the bottles of wine and star anise to the pan and heat gently until warm. Be careful not to let the mulled wine boil at this stage otherwise the alcohol will burn off, together with many of the healthy benefits of red wine! Ladle into glasses and decorate with a wedge of orange (studded with a few extra cloves if you wish). To make a less alcoholic version, simply add a little more orange juice and water. For a non-alcoholic version, replace the red wine with cranberry juice.

The-Hunger-Games-Catching-Fire-ss-32

The long awaited sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opened here in the UK with ‘Midnight Screenings’ last Thursday (21st November) across the country that took a hefty total of £300k from 275 cinemas. The film then went on to take a record breaking total of over £12m over the course of the weekend; making it Lionsgate UK’s largest ever opening!

This figure is a 250% increase on the franchise’s first instalment opening weekend of £4.9m in March 2012. The Hunger Games took £24m in the UK and grossed nearly $700 million at the box office worldwide.

Lionsgate UK CEO Zygi Kamasa commented: “We are thrilled with the outstanding box office and audience response to THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE. Katniss and the world of Panem has struck a chord with UK audiences and critics alike with results to substantiate that. We are looking forward to seeing where Mockingjay will take us next.”

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

Just so you know, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be available to pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray from Tuesday 3rd December!!!

FASHION: THE RIGHT SHOE – HANNELI MUSTAPARTA

HANNELI MUSTAPARTA_at shoescribe.com

Cinderella and a wayward glass slipper gave us a little taste of it early on, Dorothy seconded with a ruby version while their modern-day counterpart, Carrie Bradshaw, and her amplified affinity for anything with a heel sealed the deal – a pair of shoes, especially the right ones, can truly change a woman’s life.

Marilyn Monroe immortalized the thought in her now famous quote, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.”

High end online shoe store Shoescribe.com took these as inspiration and traveled the world from London and Paris, NYC to Toronto to meet up with six female icons for their Holiday campaign; and asked them “What’s the right shoe for you?”. Each completely different with just a few things in common – success, style and a love for shoes. In each interview they give us a little career advice, their future goals, fondest shoe memories and style tips; in addition to their selections of the 4 styles they’ll be wearing to conquer their world!

It Girl/Blogger/Professional Fashionista Hanneli Mustaparta takes us on a photoshoot with her where she tells us what makes her favourite shoe; her dreams of becoming a photographer; and about her extensive shoe closet, she’s currently wearing 30-35 pairs at the moment – but also has an archive of shoes that she loves but doesn’t wear which include a pair of Alaia shoes. Watch the interview below.

FASHION: OASIS SPRING/SUMMER 2014 EDIT

OASIS SS14 1

The Oasis Spring/Summer 2014 collection is full of prints, patterns, and pops of colour, from flat florals, bold botanicals and tropical palms to marble effects, tribal motifs, graphic monochrome designs and snakeskin jacquards! Contrast patterns and reversible sister print separates herald an exciting new head-to-toe patched rather than matched look; encouraging everyone to go print crazy, whether it be a jumpsuit, and suit, or a mix and match top and bottom.

As well as the prints we were obsessed with the chambray denim, Broderie Anglaise, plush suedes, and laser cut leather pieces in an array of colours fit for the spring/summer months – from pistachio to lemon to peach offering a tasty highlight. Pastel shades contrasted with accents of sunny chartreuse, chilli red, Delftware blues, burnt oranges and monochromatic black and white.
