My Fear of the Salon

I’m not sure if I’ve said this in “public” but, I really cannot stand anybody else’s hands in my head, other than my own!  Seriously.  I’d go so far as to say I have a fear of the salon.  There’s nothing worse than going to the salon (or wherever your hairdresser resides) and not being happy with the result.  That has happened to me too many times for me to mention, probably due to the fact that I’m so damn picky.

Anyway, because of that, for at least 10 years I’ve trimmed, cut, coloured, styled, etc my own hair – give or take a few tracks here and there.  So at this point, it just feels alien to me for someone else to do it.

The Textured Hair Guru

Danni from Aveda told me they had a “textured hair guru” at the Aveda Institute.  So naturally, I was intrigued.  I wanted to see wha gwarn for this?  So I booked an appointment with Subrina.

When I got to the Aveda Institute, I checked in and was offered some Aveda tea, which is the perfect blend of peppermint and licorice.  It’s actually my fave, I buy peppermint and licorice tea all the time.  So every time I was asked “can I get you anything?”, my response was “can I have some more tea please?”.  They’ve probably never had anyone drink so much tea!

Subrina gave me the consultation of all consultations, before even touching a strand on my head.  Which completely put me at ease, and instilled my trust in her.  I must add, it’s very difficult for me to put my faith and trust in people, but that’s another post.

The Consultation

We went over my hair routine; how I wash it, how I style it, how I trim it, how I treat it – YOU NAME IT!!!  Proper in depth, you know?  She asked me what I wanted to have done.  I went on to tell her that it had been 6 months since I last trimmed my ends.  So I really didn’t want to have any kind of blow drying or straightening as I had planned to do that myself; so I just wanted a wash n go.  She pretty much asked, what was the point in going to the salon for a wash n go?!  And quite rightly so; so she suggested she gave me a trim seeing as it had been 6 months and a deep treatment.  You know what?  I said yes!!!

After she had a good idea of everything, she took my hair down from the four buns I had put it in earlier.  She examined my tresses and consulted a little more.

I was then introduced to a young girl (we’ll call her Jnr) who gave me 3 scents to smell; once I chose the one that resonated the most, she gave me a head and neck massage.  After this, I was taken to get my hair cleansed and treated with the Dry Remedy treatment.

The Trim

Once cleansed and treated, I was back in Subrina’s hands.  Smooth Infusion Style Prep Smoother was added to my hair as a heat protectant before it was blown out, in preparation for the trim.  I was pleasantly surprised the way she trimmed my hair; she trimmed it in almost the exact same way that I would have done it myself.

Now let me elaborate on the reasons I loved the way she trimmed my hair – 1) because she did it the way I would, meaning I was totally at ease at the way it would turn out.  And 2) because she did it the way I would have, which means I’m damn near a professional!  It made me feel good about myself, so sue me.

About an inch was trimmed off in total, she said my ends were in really good condition (more feeling good about myself!) considering it had been 6 months since my last trim.

The Wash n Go

After the trim, Subrina took me back around to the wash area, wet my hair down and added the styling products.  She used the Be Curly Curl Enhancing Cream, followed by the Confixor, and my favourite product the Dry Remedy Oil.

Once I stood up, she asked me to bend at the hip, to flip my hair over.  She then asked me to raise up slowly and let my hair fall into place naturally.  I was then sat under what’s called the Roller Ball, which radiates heat, but doesn’t blow out any hair; so it dries your hair without moving a single curl out of place.  I think it’s what they use for colour and highlights; at least it looks like the same contraption.

The Eats

Whilst I was drying under the rollerball, I had another tea (grins), and I ordered some eats from the in-house Le Pain.  Oats porridge, and boiled eggs on sour dough toast were my choice as well as a green juice that Subrina recommended.  All absolutely delish!!!

In conclusion, my trip to the Aveda Institute was a complete joy.  Would I do it again?  Absolutely!  Has Subrina cured my fear of hairdressers?  Most definitely not!  However, she has solidified my trust in her, and I would 100% recommend her to any and everybody.  Actually maybe, not everybody, only people I like.
