GREATEST BOX SET SOUNDTRACKS

While storylines, acting, graphics and sets are hugely important, many viewers often underestimate the impact that a musical soundtrack can have on production value. To celebrate the efforts of musical production teams, we’ve put together a list of some of the greatest box set soundtracks in existence, from modern greats to timeless classics.

game of thrones

Game of Thrones

Composed by German born Ramin Djawadi, the HBO Game of Thrones soundtrack is nothing short of an instrumental masterpiece. The dramatic Main Title theme song is instantly recognisable and has embedded itself in contemporary pop culture. Search ‘Game of Thrones song’ on YouTube and you’ll be bombarded with covers from jazz groups, bagpipers, rock bands and everyone in-between. The Game of Thrones Season 4 soundtrack is just as impressive as its predecessors, featuring a cameo appearance from Icelandic band Sigur Rós as well as 21 other original compilations. Djawadi has most definitely done the epic fantasy drama series justice with Emmy Award winning tracks such as The Mountain and the Viper.

Nashville-Soundtrack-Season-2-Volume-1

Nashville

As a series revolving around the US country music scene, it comes as no surprise that Nashville boasts a pretty impressive soundtrack. It can be a risky business asking actors to lend their vocals to a show but it turns out that Hayden Panettiere and Connie Britton can really belt out a tune! Not to mention their talented co-stars Clare Bowen and Charles Esten. Hundreds of original recordings were produced for the show, with a cherry picked selection making it onto the soundtrack and even winning places in the official US country music charts.

GIRLS_SoundtrackVol2_CoverArt

Girls

Sassy and scandalous, Girls was one of the hottest TV shows to hit screens in 2012. And Lena Dunham’s handpicked selection of tunes was the icing on the cake. Featuring artists such as Robyn, Oasis, Fleet Foxes and Santigold, the compilations are a fantastic mix of classic rock, on-trend indie and upbeat pop.

The Wire - And All The Pieces Matter (2008)

The Wire

After five seasons on air, fans of the ‘greatest TV drama of all time’ were crying out for an official soundtrack. Warner delivered with a 35 track deluxe album titled, ‘The Wire… And All The Pieces Matter.’ Covering five years of music as well as clips of some of the show’s most famous quotes, this compilation is a must-have for any fan of the acclaimed crime drama series.

flight of the conchords

Flight of the Conchords

Against all odds, quirky New Zealanders Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement managed to simultaneously break into the comedy, music and TV scenes. The result was a hit HBO TV series which quickly developed a cult following. Featuring hit songs such as Bowie, Robots and The Prince of Parties, the debut Flight of the Conchords is charming, funny and inherently clever. With HBO confirming a four episode encore, fans can expect a handful of new songs and an abundance of guaranteed laughs.

Next time you’re watching your favourite TV series, take a minute to think about what music is accompanying the scenes and whether or not the episode would be anywhere near as engaging without it!
